Mentor Program

Committee Chair: Bonnie McLeod, EI
bmcleod@mathewsconsultinginc.com

The Mentor Program is an educational outreach program by which practicing engineers, who are members of the Florida Engineering Society, volunteer their time to mentor an engineering student (protégé) at Florida Atlantic University.

The purpose of the Mentor Program is to:

  1. Create professional contacts for the engineering student;
  2. Connect the classroom experience to the real world;
  3. Nurture and guide future engineers;
  4. Introduce engineering students to people who have voyaged down the same educational path;
  5. Encourage the students to continue their pursuit of engineering;
  6. Expose the protégés to FES.

Mentors commit one academic year to one or two students, and are encouraged to communicate with their protégé(s) once every two weeks through emails or phone calls, offering support, appropriate advice, and encouragement. They are also encouraged to meet monthly, but are required to meet at least twice a semester, with one meeting being facilitated by the Student Professional Development Committee (SPDC) of the Palm Beach Chapter. The opportunity to mentor is open to all of the members of the local chapter.

*The Mentor Program is the 2008 Ace Award Third Place Winner.
